GVSHP is proud to share with you the latest addition to our online Historic Image Archive – our new collection called Carole Teller’s Changing New York (click to view).

Bread and Puppet Theater Parade, Bleecker Street, ca. 1980

Carole is an artist and longtime supporter of GVSHP who has lived in the East Village since the early 1960s. She has generously donated to GVSHP over five hundred photographic images she took of Lower Manhattan and all of New York from the early 1960s to the early 1990s.  This is the first one hundred of those images, and they show an incredible story of change in New York over the last half century.  Carole had a keen and prescient eye catching things on the verge of change, erasure, demolition, restoration, or renewal.  All the pictures capture slices of New York that are both familiar and foreign, since every one of these images portrays a scene which in one way or another no longer exists, at least as portrayed.

Loew’s Avenue B Theatre, 5th Street, mid-1960s

Prints of all these images are available for sale through the website, with proceeds benefitting GVSHP.

“Taxi Driver” at the St. Mark’s Theater (2nd Avenue), ca. 1980.

You can view all the images and collections on GVSHP’s Historic Image Archive here.

Astor Place and “The Cube,” ca. 1983.

You can search for images by location on our map here.

Wheatpasted flyers for John Cage, Richard Hell, the Cramps, James White, and more, 1982.

We hope you’ll enjoy this collection as much as we have, and share it with others.

“I Am the Best Artist” Mural, West Broadway and Broome Street, ca. 1985.

Look for more additions to the Carole Teller’s Changing New York collection coming soon!
