Applications Filed for New Developments at 11-19 and 85 Jane Street
On Friday, building permit applications were filed for 11-19 Jane Street and 85 Jane Street. GVSHP has previously reported on the development potential for both these sites, which were both purchased in recent years for large sums of money, and has been closely monitoring plans for both sites. The filings are:
- 11-19 Jane Street (Greenwich Avenue/Hudson Street): A 74 ft. high, 6 story, 30,597 sq ft structure with 9 dwelling units. This may actually be multiple buildings; published reports say the plans include a 6-story building and lower townhouses; read more here. The permit application is here.
- 85 Jane Street (Greenwich and Washington Streets): An 80 ft. high, 5-story, 15,926 sq ft single family house. The permit application is here.
 Because both sites are located in the Greenwich Village Historic District, any proposed development will have to go through the landmarks public review and approval process, including public hearings at the Community Board and the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The latter will ultimately decide what is or is not allowed on each site. The law charges the Commission with reviewing all proposed changes in historic districts to ensure they are aesthetically “appropriate” for their surroundings, as far as such changes can be viewed from the public right of way (i.e. streets, parks, etc.).
Once applications are filed with the Landmarks Preservation Commission, we will be able to see more details of what is proposed. GVSHP works closely with neighbors on applications such as these, working to ensure that inappropriate designs and developments are not approved. We monitor for building, demolition, and major alteration permit applications for every one of more than 6,500 lots in our neighborhood every day, which is how we became aware of these permit applications.
