City delays Far West Village rezoning

GVSHP and community groups have been pushing for two years to get the city to change an outdated zoning district in the Far West Village which encourages out-of-scale commercial development in the area. After being stonewalled for over a year, in 2009 the city finally agreed to support our requested rezoning, and in February at a public meeting said that the rezoning process would begin in April or early May of this year.

However, GVSHP has now learned that the city will NOT be meeting its promised April or early May date for the beginning of the rezoning process, with late May as the earliest possible date they are now considering. Unfortunately every day the rezoning is delayed can make a significant difference, as several developers are seeking to move ahead with projects in the area while the old, inappropriate zoning is still in effect. The zoning proposed by GVSHP and community groups, which the city has promised to implement, would reduce the allowable size and height of new development, and eliminate current bonuses granted for hotel and dorm development.

GVSHP and allied community groups have written to City Planning urging that there be no further delays, and that the rezoning process begin as soon as possible.
