On Monday, the historic White Horse Tavern was shuttered by its new owners and operators, while they ‘renovate’ the space before it is set to re-open. Though the windows have been papered over obscuring the public view of the inside, neighbors report seeing decades-old fixtures of the 140-year-old literary haunt being carried away, leading to growing concerns about the fate of the culturally significant space.
While the exterior of the building is landmarked, the interior of the tavern is not. Village Preservation proposed the space for landmark designation after word broke of the change in ownership, and local elected officials have strongly supported that call. On Monday, we reached out to the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) to alert them to the immediate danger to the space and urged them to act swiftly. Local elected officials added their considerable weight to that call.
