City announces it will release downzoning and landmark plans for Far West Village

News follows huge weekend demonstration organized by GVSHP

Following a huge demonstration organized by the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation on Saturday (for pictures and more information, CLICK HERE), the City announced today that it would soon release downzoning and landmark plans for the Far West Village, and was shooting for a June release date. To see New York Sun article CLICK HERE.

THIS IS AN ENORMOUS VICTORY FOR OUR EFFORT TO PRESERVE THE HISTORIC CHARACTER AND SCALE OF OUR NEIGHBORHOOD.  However, details of neither plan have yet been released, and it is critical that we let the City know that the plans must be as comprehensive and inclusive as possible, to protect the historic character of ALL OF THE FAR WEST VILLAGE.

PLEASE SEND LETTERS TO THE CITY RIGHT NOW applauding their commitment to move ahead with downzoning and landmarking plans for the Far West Village, but urging them to ensure that the entire neighborhood is comprehensively protected. CLICK HERE for sample letters.

The downzoning plan is currently scheduled to come before the Community Board #2 Zoning Committee on Thursday, June 9th, at 6:30 P.M., location to be announced. Please put that date and time on your calendar, as your attendance will be critical.

As soon as we have more information about specifics of the plan, and about meeting locations, we will let you know.

Your participation in this effort has helped bring us to this critical point. The hundreds of people who turned out on Saturday for our event (which generated coverage by Channels 2, 5, and 7), and the thousands of letters, e-mails, and postcards that have been sent to the City have propelled this effort forward.

The next few weeks will be critical in fighting to ensure that landmarking and downzoning plans do move forward, are approved, and are as comprehensive as possible.
