City Planning Approves Certification of Far West Village Rezoning Plan!

Today the City Planning Commission voted to certify the community-requested rezoning of six blocks in the Far West Village!

With this vote, the plan now officially begins the public review and approval process, which takes about six months. This is an important step forward in more than two years of efforts by GVSHP and allied community groups to rid these blocks of an outdated zoning district which encourages out-of-scale hotel and dorm development.

If approved, the proposed rezoning will not take effect until the review process is completed, around the end of this year. That still leaves developers considerable time to start projects under the old, more permissive zoning, and we know of at least two who may be seeking to do so. Unfortunately the City will generally allow a project to be completed under the old zoning even if foundation work has only just begun at the time the new zoning is approved, which is why GVSHP has been pushing so hard for the last two years to get the rezoning process underway as soon as possible. For last year’s “Frequently Asked Questions” page about the rezoning, CLICK HERE.

GVSHP will monitor any potential development sites in the rezoning area very carefully for any sign of illegal work aimed at “beating the clock” and getting a project approved under the wire, and we ask you to do the same. If you see any work which you believe is illegal, such as work done without a permit, after legally allowable hours, or done in a dangerous manner, please call 311 right away and get a complaint number (or 911 if there is an immediate danger). Please contact GVSHP right away with the information as well, and if at all possible, please take pictures of the illegal work, ideally with a date and time stamp.

For more information about the rezoning, read HERE and HERE. Thank you again to everyone who wrote to city officials, participated in town halls, or testified at Community Board hearings in support of this effort — we appreciate all your hard work!
