Far West Village Rezoning To Finally Move Ahead!

After numerous delays and missed deadlines, the Far West Village Rezoning which GVSHP and community groups first proposed over two years ago is finally scheduled to be ‘certified,’ or begin the official process of consideration, on Monday. This long-overdue rezoning will limit the size and height of new development over six blocks between Washington and Greenwich Streets and eliminate the current incentive for hotel and dorm development. Once certified, it will then go through a public hearing and approval process which will take approximately six months. GVSHP will let you know when these hearings have been scheduled and how you can participate.

This rezoning effort has faced many hurdles.  After GVSHP and community groups initially called for the rezoning in April of 2008 in response to plans for a 100+ foot tall hotel at Perry and Washington Streets, we faced a deafening silence. However, after more than a year of letter-writing campaigns, press conferences, and Town Hall meetings, in April of 2009 Community Board 2 finally held a public hearing on the matter and passed a resolution in support. In September 2009 local elected officials sent a letter to City Planning indicating their support for the proposed rezoning, and in November 2009 City Planning finally agreed to propose the rezoning. However, after initially promising to certify the plan in April of this year, the date was pushed back to May and now June. With the certification vote now scheduled for Monday, however, the rezoning plan may now finally move ahead.

Time has been and continues to be of the essence for this rezoning, as at least two developers are currently seeking to move ahead with projects under the current, more permissive zoning, and GVSHP has identified at least a dozen other potential development sites in this small six block area.

Thank you to everyone who wrote letters, sent e-mails, and participated in our Town Hall meetings on this issue — your hard work has helped produce these results!
