Gansevoort Demolition/Oversized Development Proposal Back at Landmarks Tomorrow, Tuesday Feb. 9

The proposal to demolish a pair of 1-2 story historic market buildings on Gansevoort Street and replace them with new buildings up to 120 feet tall, as well as triple the height of other 2-story market buildings on the street, will return to the Landmarks Preservation Commission next Tuesday, February 9th at 11:15 am.  The developers have not changed their plan, but will be responding to the litany of criticisms their proposal received from the public at the hearing in November, as well as feedback from the Commissioners.

While the public will not be allowed to speak at this public meeting, it’s vital that we have a large presence to remind the Commissioners of the strength of our opposition
(GVSHP will provide stickers for you to wear so the Commissioners are aware of your opposition).  GVSHP is strongly opposed to this plan, which would fundamentally alter the character of this historic cobblestoned street at the heart of the Gansevoort Market Historic District, of which GVSHP successfully proposed and secured landmark designation in 2003.

Find out more about the proposal here and here.

HOW TO HELP:

  • Come to the Landmarks Preservation Commission public meeting on Tuesday, February 9 at 11:15 am (start time is approximate; multiple items will be heard that day – arrive early to ensure you don’t miss the beginning) at the LPC, Municipal Building, One Centre Street (at Chambers Street), 9th floor.  Listen to the presentation, and (if you like) grab a “Save Gansevoort” sticker to wear from GVSHP to let the Commissioners know why you’re there.

  • Write the Landmarks Preservation Commission NOW urging them to reject the proposal> >
