Landmarks Preservation Commission To Consider Proposed Addition In the Heart of the Meatpacking District This Tuesday
On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission will consider a proposal to add a large addition to 9-19 Ninth Avenue (Little West 12th Street) in the heart of the Meatpacking District. Fortunately, the site is also in the heart of the Gansevoort Market Historic District GVSHP proposed and successfully fought for in 2003, and thus any changes to buildings are subject to public hearings and the review of the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission.
This two-story structure, facing 'Gansevoort Plaza' (the cobblestoned, wide-open intersection of Ninth Avenue and Greenwich, Little West 12th, and Gansevoort Streets), is a visual lynchpin in this historic neighborhood. The proposed addition would roughly double the height of the building, and would be visible for more than a half dozen blocks down Greenwich Street (click here for more on the application and here and here for images of the proposal). We feel the proposed addition would too visually intrusive, and overwhelms the existing building, which for many years housed the restaurant Pastis.
It's important that the Landmarks Preservation Commission hear from the public about this proposal before they make any decisions.
