HUGE TURNOUT VS. GANSEVOORT PLAN;
COMMUNITY BOARD STRONGLY OPPOSED;
LANDMARKS HEARING NOW NOVEMBER 10

Dear friend,

Last Thursday over one hundred people turned out for the Community Board #2 public hearing on the proposed massive changes to Gansevoort Street in the Gansevoort Market Historic District.  NOT A SINGLE MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC PRESENT SUPPORTED THE PROPOSED PLAN, which includes demolishing two buildings, building two new buildings, one of which would reach 122 feet in height, and building four stories atop a row of historic 2-story market buildings, raising them to 98 feet in height.

I am pleased to report that the Community Board committee has come out strongly against the development proposal, as did GVSHP this summer. This plan would destroy this iconic, cobblestoned, landmarked block, which is a gateway to the Meatpacking District, the West Village, the High Line, and the Whitney Museum.  And it would undermine the landmark protections we fought so hard to secure for this neighborhood in 2003.

You can view the entire revised application here.

The next and most important stop in the process is the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC), which will hold public hearings and decide whether to approve, disapprove, or modify the proposed plan.  Originally scheduled for next Tuesday, September 27th, the LPC public hearing has now been pushed back to Tuesday, November 10 (time TBD).  We will need a big turnout at the hearing to ensure this plan is not approved.

HOW TO HELP:

Sincerely,

Andrew Berman
Executive Director
