Air Rights Bill on Gov. Cuomo’s Desk; Critical Town Hall Meeting Next Wed., Nov. 13 at 6:30 pm

Late on Friday, the bill allowing 1.6 million square feet of air rights from the Hudson River Park to be used for development one block inland from the park arrived on Governor Cuomo’s desk. He can sign it into law, veto it, or simply let it become law without his signature.

Last week, GVSHP and fellow community groups wrote to Governor Cuomo expressing our extreme concern about the air rights provision of the bill and the potential overdevelopment of our waterfront it could lead to (read here).  We also let him know that we did not want to see any air rights transferred from the Park through a state process known as a “General Project Plan,” which would give our neighborhoods almost no leverage over the outcome.

This bill has far-reaching potential consequences; if it becomes law, it will require an enormous effort to ensure that it is not used to facilitate oversized, inappropriate development along our Hudson River waterfront.  That is why GVSHP and more than twenty Village, Chelsea, Tribeca, and SoHo groups are co-sponsoring a Town Hall meeting on Wednesday Nov. 13th to educate and mobilize the public in response to this legislation.

HOW TO HELP:

  • Write or call Governor Cuomo right away to let him know your concerns about the air rights provision of the Hudson River Park bill and its potential to lead to overdevelopment of our waterfront – use sample letter here or call him at (518) 474-8390.

  • Come to the Town Hall on Hudson River Park air rights on Wednesday, November 13th at 6:30 pm at Our Lady of Guadalupe/St. Bernard’s Church, 328 W. 14th Street (8th/9th Avenues) – download flyer here.

  • Spread the word – share this e-mail with friends, family, and neighbors!
