MTA presents Mulry Square construction ‘options’

The MTA recently presented three options for constructing a new ‘Emergency Ventilation Plant’ structure at Mulry Square, on a triangular lot they own bounded by Greenwich Avenue and 7th Avenue South which currently includes the 9-11 Memorial Tiles. GVSHP has long been a critic of the MTA plan, citing impact upon adjacent historic resources, the combined impact of this and the nearby planned St. Vincent’s/Rudin project, and a lack of rationale for not considering other location options. After initially presenting options that included underground structures only as well as above-ground structures, the MTA’s most recent presentation eliminated all the below-ground options without any clear explanation as to why.

GVSHP has responded to the latest presentation, decrying the lack of consideration of other locations and below-ground options, as well the poor quality of the proposed designs, their relationship to their surroundings and the 9-11 Memorial Tiles, and the lack of meaningful promised public open space. GVSHP has urged that these other options be considered, and that if the MTA does build above-ground at this location, that they bring in an outside design consultant to make the structure more compatible with its surroundings.

HOW TO HELP:

  • Using GVSHP’s letter as a model, write to the MTA by Friday, July 17 expressing your concerns about the proposed designs — be sure to send a copy of your letter to GVSHP.
