Opposing NYU Zoning Variance TOMORROW

There will be a very important hearing tomorrow on NYU’s request to receive a zoning variance for a large new facility at 730 Broadway (Waverly Place). GVSHP and NoHo and SoHo community groups are opposing the zoning variance, and we urge you to as well.

What’s the problem with NYU’s plan?

  • When NYU went through the public review process for their massive 2031 expansion plan (which GVSHP and allies are fighting in court), they promised they were putting ALL their plans on the table, fully disclosing their future developments.  But literally days after their final approvals came through, the university suddenly revealed that their plans for 730 Broadway included seeking a zoning variance for uses prohibited by the existing zoning, and adding four stories atop this building in the NoHo Historic District – facts they had NEVER before disclosed.

  • NoHo and SoHo’s zoning explicitly prohibit these types of university uses, and has been the firewall AGAINST NYU’s expansion in these neighborhoods.  However, if NYU receives the zoning variance they have requested, it will open both these neighborhoods to unfettered potential university expansion, changing their fundamental character forever.

  • NYU’s own faculty turned out at the Community Board public hearings to speak out AGAINST the proposed zoning variance for this development.
