Critical February Public Hearings and Votes

Aerial view of proposed NYU expansion plan

As we enter the second month of the seven-month public review and approval process for NYU's massive proposed twenty-year expansion plan, there are several important February Community Board #2 public hearings which will precede the board's vote that I strongly urge you to attend:

  • Thursday, Feb. 16 at 6:30 pm - CB2 NYU Working Group/ Architectural Presentation of NYU Plan - at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 151-155 Sullivan Street (below Houston), lower hall.  The NYU Working Group will draft language for a resolution to be voted upon by the full Community Board.  Following a presentation of their plans by NYU, the public will be allowed to testify.  I STRONGLY URGE YOU TO ATTEND, AND CALL UPON THE WORKING GROUP AND CB 2 TO PASS LANGUAGE CALLING FOR THE UNEQUIVOCAL REJECTION OF THE NYU PLAN.

  • Monday, Feb. 20 at 6:30 pm - CB2 NYU Working Group - at Our Lady of Pompei Church, Bleecker and Carmine Streets (enter on Bleecker), basement hall.  The NYU Working Group will decide upon its proposed language; THOSE WHO DID NOT TESTIFY ON THE 16th OR WITH ADDITIONAL INFORMATION WILL BE ENCORUAGED TO TESTIFY, AND A BIG TURNOUT IS ENCOURAGED TO SEND A MESSAGE TO THE COMMITTEE AND THE BOARD.

  • Thursday, Feb. 23 at 6pm - Full CB2 Meeting - at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 151-155 Sullivan Street (below Houston), lower hall.  Community Board 2 will vote upon a resolution regarding the NYU plan, which will go to elected and appointed officials who will decide the fate of the plan.  ANY MEMBER OF THE PUBLIC CAN TESTIFY, AND YOU ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND - THIS IS FAR AND AWAY THE MOST IMPORTANT MEETING IN FEBRUARY TO ATTEND REGARDING THE NYU PLAN.

Huge turnout against NYU plan at January community board meeting

Additionally, starting Monday, all CB2 Committees which met and held hearings last month on the NYU plan will meet again in February to formulate their position.  THERE WILL BE LIMITED OPPORTUNITY FOR PUBLIC TESTIMONY, AND THOSE WHO DID NOT SPEAK LAST MONTH OR WITH NEW INFORMATION ARE ENCOURAGED TO TESTIFY.  If you don't testify but can attend, a large presence will help send a message to the Board and elected officials about opposition to the plan.  Of the five committee meetings, Zoning and Parks are the most critical, but the three hearings above are the most important to attend and at which to testify.  The additional committee meetings are:

  • Monday, Feb. 6 at 6:30 pm -- Education Committee - LGBT Center, 208 W. 13th Street, rm. 101 (NYU is the 1st item)

  • Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 6:30 pm - Traffic Committee - Our Lady of Pompei Church, Bleecker/Carmine Streets, basement hall (NYU is the 1st item)

  • Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 6:30 pm - Parks Committee -- St. Anthony of Padua Church, 151-155 Sullivan Street below Houston, lower hall (NYU is the 3rd item)

  • Thursday Feb. 9 at 6:30 pm - Land Use Committee -- Our Lady of Pompei Church, Bleecker/Carmine Streets, basement hall (NYU is the 3rd item)

Hundreds attend Town Hall in opposition to NYU plan

Hundreds and hundreds of people attended January's public hearings to call upon the Community Board, the Borough President, the City Planning Commission, and the City Council to VOTE DOWN the NYU plan.  The plan CANNOT move ahead unless it is approved by both the City Planning Commission and the City Council.  WE HAVE GREAT MOMENTUM ON OUR SIDE - LET'S KEEP IT GOING IN FEBRUARY!
