NYU reveals latest version of 20-year expansion plan

NYU has revealed an updated version of its twenty-year expansion plan. After withdrawing plans for a 40-story hotel/residence tower on Bleecker Street in the face of overwhelming opposition, including from architect I.M. Pei, NYU is now splitting the proposed development between two sites — a 30-story tower on the corner of Mercer and Houston Street, and another building the supermarket site on Bleecker Street and LaGuardia Place. For more information, see images below or click HERE.

Otherwise the plan remains basically the same as before. NYU is still seeking to add up to 2.2 million square feet of space — the equivalent of the Empire State Building — to the blocks just below Washington Square Park, and another 1 to 1.5 million square feet of space in the surrounding neighborhood. They are seeking major zoning changes to eliminate open space preservation requirements. They are seeking to take over public land currently used as park and recreational space. They are seeking to lift long-standing urban renewal deed restrictions that would allow them to build on land they are currently prohibited from building upon. And they are seeking a massive zoning changes for nine blocks south and east of Washington Square, changing the zoning from residential to commercial.

NYU will present these plans to the public on Monday, March 21 starting at 6:30 pm at Grace Church School Auditorium, 86 Fourth Avenue (at 11th Street).  Please attend to find out more and express your opinion.
