City Planning Commission Hearing on NYU Plan Set for April 25

NYU 2031 Plan: proposed buildings in gray;
exisiting buildings in white

NYU 2031 PlanThe City Planning Commission’s Hearing on NYU’s massive Village expansion plan has been set for Wednesday, April 25th at 10 am at the Museum of the American Indian, at 1 Bowling Green (broadway at Battery Place/State Street near Battery Park; 4/5 to Bowling Green; R or 1 to Whitehall Street-South Ferry; or J to Broad Street; M5, M15, or M20 Bus).  ATTENDANCE AND TESTIMONY AGAINST THE PLAN IS CRITICAL.

NYU’s plan can ONLY move ahead if it is approved by both the City Planning Commission and the City Council.  This is the ONLY public hearing the City Planning Commission is scheduled to have on the plan, and the City Council is likely to only have one as well (which may be held in late June or July, when many may be unable to attend).

NYU is seeking approval to overturn neighborhood zoning protections, take public land, and abrogate the terms of urban renewal agreements under which the university acquired city-owned land, in order to build 2.5 million square feet of new space – the equivalent of the Empire State Building – on the blocks south of Washington Square.

PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND ON APRIL 25TH.  In order to testify, you may have to stay for several hours, although just attending for any period of time to show your opposition is helpful too.  IF YOU CAN PLAN TO ATTEND AND STAY FOR SEVERAL HOURS AND TESTIFY, IT WILL BE TREMENDOUSLY HELPFUL.  GVSHP will provide information about how to testify and sample language as we get closer to the hearing.

Borough President Stringer’s vote on the plan is expected on Wednesday.  To help, write to the Borough President and other city officials urging them to oppose the plan by CLICKING HERE, or call the Borough President’s office at 212/669-8300.
