NYU Update: Critical Hearing 4/25; Rally 4/20
As the public review and approval process for NYU’s massive proposed Village expansion plan moves forward, it is more important than ever to call for the rejection of this destructive, wrong-headed plan. There are two important events in the next week to be aware of:

 City Planning Commission Public Hearing Wednesday, April 25th at 10 am, The Museum of the American Indian, 1 Bowling Green (Broadway at Battery Place/State St. near Battery Park – take the 4/5 to Bowling Green; the 1 or R to Whitehall Street-South Ferry; or the J to Broad Street; M5, M15, or M20 Bus) – This will likely be the ONLY public hearing the City Planning Commission holds before voting on the NYU plan. The City Planning Commission and the City Council will decide whether or not the plan is approved, MAKING THIS A CRITICALLY IMPORTANT HEARING TO ATTEND AND AT WHICH TO TESTIFY. Public testimony will be limited to 3 minutes per person, but you can submit longer testimony in writing. You are encouraged to bring 15 copies of your testimony to submit. GVSHP, NYU Faculty Against the Sexton Plan, and numerous community groups will be co-sponsoring a rally organized by Assemblymember Deborah Glick against the NYU 2031 plan this Friday, April 20th at 4pm, starting at Houston and Mercer Streets and ending in Washington Square – see the flyer HERE. This will be an important opportunity to get the word out about the City Planning Commission hearing on the 25th, and to send a message to city officials elected and community leaders that we continue to strongly oppose the NYU plan.
 Last week Borough President Scott Stringer voted to recommend approval of the NYU plan based upon a 16% reduction in the size of what would be the largest development project in the Village’s history. GVSHP continues to oppose the revised plan, which would still overwhelm the neighborhood with NYU’s ever-expanding presence, would still turn a residential neighborhood into a 20-year construction zone, would still give away public land, would still strip neighborhood zoning and open space preservation protections, still ignores vastly preferable alternative locations, and would still abrogate the terms under which NYU was given the formerly-public land upon which they are now located, which was intended to prohibit this type of development from ever taking place – read more HERE.
