NYU 2031 Expansion Plan Sustainability Hearing

A public hearing will be held on the sustainability aspects of NYU’s 2031 Expansion Plan by Community Board #2’s Arts and Institutions Committee next Monday, May 17th at 6:30 pm at 75 Morton Street (Hudson/Greenwich Streets). The Community Task Force on NYU Development, convened by Borough President Stringer, issued a series of recommendations to NYU regarding a sustainable model for its growth, and the hearing will look into some of those issues.

NYU recently presented its 2031 Expansion Plan to Community Board #3 (East Village/Lower East Side — read coverage HERE), while Community Board #1 (Financial District) has continued to urge NYU to look in its neighborhood for sites for the massive expansion it is currently planning for the Village “core” around Washington Square Park (read HERE). Several hundred people attended an April Community Board #2 public hearing on the NYU 2031, largely to express opposition to the plan.

NYU’s 2031 Plan for development in the “core” will require several zoning approvals and the sale of city-owned land to NYU; these must be approved by the City Council, City Planning Commission, and Borough President. First, however, NYU must seek approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission to build its proposed 40-story hotel on Bleecker Street in the landmarked Silver Towers complex; NYU says they expect to file that application in September.  GVSHP will keep you informed about the process and how you can be involved.
