Op-Ed Challenging NYU’s Expansion Plans
The Villager newspaper published an op-ed by GVSHP Executive Director Andrew Berman challenging NYU's claims regarding the need for and appropriateness of their expansion plan. The op-ed specifically highlights NYU's recent submissions to the City Planning Commission (which must approve their requested zoning changes) for their lack of responsiveness to questions about the need for expanding their facilities in the Village. The op-ed also notes that the documents submitted by NYU reveal that the large dorm the university is seeking to build in the Village would house 1,000 freshman students relocated from their current residence at 23rd Street and 3rd Avenue.
You can read the op-ed HERE. As noted in the op-ed, while the majority of the City Planning Commission's members are appointed by the Mayor, who has stated his unequivocal support for the NYU plan, the plan must still be approved by the City Council.
