Reminder: Community meeting on NYU growth plans

GVSHP, Greenwich Village Block Associations, and a dozen other community groups will be holding an Open Forum on the NYU 2031 Plan this Monday, June 22 at 6:30 pm at Judson Memorial Church, 55 Washington Square South. We stongly urge you to attend this meeting, to find out more from community groups about NYU’s expansion plan for the next 22 years and our concerns about and perspective on it.

As you may know, NYU has been formulating a blueprint for its growth over the next several decades. Current incarnations of the plan predict the university as much as doubling its already overwhelming rate of growth in our neighborhoods during this time period. Additionally, while NYU has agreed to a set of “planning principles” which are supposed to guide its actions, there has thus far been little evidence of their abiding by those principles which call for re-use of existing buildings rather than new development, and finding alternative locations outside of our neighborhood for university facilities.

Come to the forum on Monday to find out more about the plan, the process, and how you can get involved. You can view a flyer HERE and can access more information HERE. Please come, and please help spread the word!

Additionally, this past Tuesday NYU presented plans for its proposed new ‘Center for Academic and Spiritual Life’ to replace the recently demolished Catholic Center at 58 Washington Square South. Read GVSHP’s response.

We hope to see you on Monday.
