Presentation by NYU on expansion plan

Presentation by NYU before Community Board #2 Institutions Committee on Monday, July 18 regarding “possible temporary and non-permanent conditions and structural elements of the proposal Plan 2031.” Meeting begins at 6:30 pm at Judson Memorial Church Assembly Hall, 239 Thompson Street (3rd Street/Washington Sq. So.). This is the first item on the agenda (details HERE).

Background: NYU is proposing a massive 20 year expansion plan which includes 3 million square feet of space they want to add in the Village.  Much of their plan is prohibited under current zoning and urban renewal restrictions for the neighborhood, so NYU is applying to have these rules changed to accommodate their building plans.  NYU has just begun the environmental review process which precedes hearings and votes on their actual plan. Monday night’s presentation is expected to give details about their plans for ‘temporary’ structures on the Washington Square Village superblock if they get the approvals they are seeking, as well as the timing of their planned projects. While it is expected that the public will get to ask questions and make comments, it is neither a hearing nor a vote on the plan, which will not take place for many months. Find out more details of NYU’s plan HERE.
