Comparative Views of NYU's Proposed Construction

(Basic images taken from NYU’s zoning change application to the Department of City Planning — Available Here Warning: very large PDF).

NYU is seeking to lift long-standing neighborhood zoning protections, open space preservation requirements, and urban renewal deed restrictions, and to take possession of public land currently used for park space, in order to allow a massive amount of new construction south of Washington Square Park 2.5 mil. sq. ft., or the equivalent of the Empire State Building. Many of these new buildings would be adjacent to Silver Towers and Washington Square Village, currently far and away the largest buildings in the Village, which were, by design, surrounded by large amounts of open space and low-rise structures to balance out their mass. NYU would replace much of the open space and all of the low-rise structures with much larger and taller buildings. The below illustrations show the comparative size and height of the structures in perspective.
