After Dangerous Conditions Exposed, Calling Upon the City to Take Action Against Owner of Landmarked Former P.S. 64/Charas-El Bohio Center, 605 E. 9th Street   Last week, the New York City Fire Department and Department of Buildings had to be called in when deteriorating conditions at this empty, landmarked building appeared to endanger a neighboring residential building. Those residents had to be evacuated from their homes, and the street shut down. GVSHP and many preservationists, community groups, and community leaders have been battling the owner of this building and the city for years over the owner’s refusal to maintain the building, his attempts to demolish or destroy it, and his repeated attempts to house illegal uses in the building. In 2018, the owner sued GVSHP and fellow community groups and elected officials for continuing to wage this battle against his abuse. In 2017 when running for re-election, Mayor de Blasio said the City would try to “re-acquire” the formerly publicly-owned building, given the owner’s atrocious track record.  However, to date, the Mayor and the City have made no moves towards doing so, and have been anemic in their responses to complaints about deteriorating conditions at the building, which was left open to the elements by the owner for years. Andrew Berman speaking at the rally.   Following the recent incident, GVSHP rallied along with fellow community groups, Councilmember Carlina Rivera, Borough President Gale Brewer, State Senator Hoylman and Assemblymember Epstein to call upon the City and the Mayor to follow through on their commitments and obligations.  We called upon them to ensure that the building is maintained and made safe and secure, and as per the Mayor’s promise, is given back to public use.   See pictures from the rally here.     Next: 3/26/19 Previous: 1/26/18
