Oppose NYU’s 400 ft tall Tower Plan — Rally 11/7, Hearing 11/8

Please join the GVSHP and the Community Action Alliance on NYU 2031 for a rally and press conference this Sunday, November 7th at 2pm on Bleecker Street east of LaGuardia Place to show the broad opposition to NYU’s plan to build a 400 ft. tall hotel/residence on that site in the Silver Towers complex.

The tower would be the tallest ever constructed in Greenwich Village, 100 feet taller than the existing landmarked Silver Towers, and would require extraordinary landmarks approvals, the transfer of public lands to NYU, zoning changes to eliminate open space protections and prohibitions on commercial uses in a residential zone, and the lifting of urban renewal deed restrictions preventing new construction before 2021. View NYU’s plans HERE, and GVSHP’s animation showing what the new tower would look like in context HERE. See letter from GVSHP and other community groups to city officials about the proposal HERE.

Bring friends, neighbors, and signs! We need to send a powerful message to NYU and city officials who will vote on their plan that neither this proposal nor NYU's threatened alternative of building on the neighboring supermarket site is acceptable, and that other better alternatives should be considered. Please remember: Daylight saving time begins Sunday morning, so set your clock BACK Saturday night.

Please then join us at the Community Board 2 public hearing on NYU’s landmarks application for the 400 ft.tall tower on Monday, November 8th at 6:30 pm at Grace Church School, 94 Fourth Avenue (10th/11th Street). This will be the first official public hearing and vote on NYU's plan, and it's critical that we have a large and vocal turnout to encourage the Community Board to reject the application. The public can (and should!) speak and testify at this hearing.

HELP SPREAD THE WORD! Download the flyer for Sunday’s rally and press conference and Monday’s public hearing

YOU CAN ALSO HELP by writing to the Landmarks Preservation Commission and City Councilmember Margaret Chin, who represents the area, urging them to reject this plan — sample letter and contact information are
HERE.
