City Council Hearing on
Small Business Jobs Survival Act 10/22

Please join GVSHP in supporting the Small Business Jobs Survival Act (SBJSA), which will be heard at the City Council on October 22 at 1 pm at City Hall.

Given the blight of storefronts being held empty by landlords seeking astronomical rents, the SBJSA is critical now to help even the playing field and give small businesses a fighting chance to remain in their spaces. Read an op-ed by GVSHP on this bill and what it will do here. The SBJSA would give existing commercial tenants in good standing first crack at up to a ten-year lease renewal for the space they occupy. If they cannot come to an agreement with the landlord on a price, an arbitrator would set the terms based upon fair market value.

The SBJSA has been under consideration for three decades but has rarely received a hearing and never received a vote. Council Speaker Corey Johnson committed to giving the bill a hearing and has lived up to that promise.

If you are a small business owner or know of a small business owner that was refused a lease or given an unfair increase that pushed them out of business or forced them to move, please email hbubbins@gvshp.org.
