GVSHP is opposing a request by a developer to change the zoning for a portion of Sullivan Street between Spring and Broome Streets in the South Village. The proposed addition of a “commercial overlay” to the zoning for the street would not only allow much larger commercial spaces than currently found on this or other similar side streets in the South Village, but potentially could aid in allowing the development of larger buildings in the area.
While the proposed zoning change would only apply to a small portion of this block, GVSHP is also concerned that the approval of a “commercial overlay” here could be used as precedent to seek approval for other similar zoning changes throughout the South Village. GVSHP is seeking landmark status for the entire South Village, including this block. While the city has begun to consider designation of a portion of the South Village north of Houston Street and west of Sixth Avenue, they have not yet begun to consider landmark status for much of the remainder of the South Village, including this area. Without landmark status, such zoning changes could have an especially negative impact.
The City Planning Commission will be hearing the proposed rezoning TOMORROW.
