Sullivan Street rezoning plan withdrawn!

The application by a developer to rezone a portion of Sullivan Street in the South Village between Spring and Broome Streets, which was opposed by GVSHP and many neighbors and community groups, has been withdrawn! The City Planning Commission was set to vote on the proposal tomorrow morning, and rather than face defeat, the applicant apparently decided to withdraw the application today. Thank you to everyone who wrote to city officials and showed up at Community Board hearings to express your opposition to the proposed rezoning.

This is a very positive development. The proposed rezoning would have allowed a much larger scale of commercial stores on this quiet, historic side street, would have potentially allowed larger new developments, and could have set a precedent for other similar rezonings on residential side-streets in the South Village.

GVSHP will continue to work to preserve the special character of the South Village. If you would like to help, please send a letter to the Landmarks Preservation Commission urging that they move ahead with the entire proposed South Village Historic District as soon as possible.
