Children’s Aid Society Buildings Sold
 The Children’s Aid Society has now sold its buildings on Sullivan Street to Broad Street Development for $33 million. Unfortunately the City has consistently refused to move ahead with our requested landmark designation of the area of the South Village which includes this site, or to make zoning changes to the area. Lacking these protections, all of the Children’s Aid Society buildings, including those over 100 years old and designed by Central Park architect Calvert Vaux, may be torn down, and grossly out-of-scale and out-of-context new development could take its place. Spokesmen for Broad Street have said they will build something “tasteful and respectful of the neighborhood.” Exactly how Broad Street would define “tasteful and respectful” in this case remains to be seen, but the fact remains that without the landmark protections and zoning changes we have been requesting for this area, the developers can demolish or build whatever they like. The Landmarks Preservation Commission had promised to follow the designation of the first third of our proposed South Village Historic District last year soon after with action on the remaining sections. In spite of that promise, however, they continue to take no action.
