Children’s Aid Society Sale Imminent, South Village Landmarking Urgently Needed

The board of the Children’s Aid Society (CAS) was scheduled to vote last night on several bids for purchase of their historic Philip Coltoff Center campus at 221 Sullivan Street in the proposed, but not designated, South Village Historic District. While the results of the vote are not yet publicly known, it has been reported that at least some bidders proposed to tear down all the CAS buildings for large-scale new construction (click HERE for an image of what such a development might look like).

GVSHP has consistently called upon the City to move ahead with its promise to consider the remainder of the proposed South Village Historic District, which includes the CAS site, and held a rally in front of the complex last month along with City Councilmember Margaret Chin. So far the City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission has refused to follow through on its promise and consider the remaining area for landmark designation.
