South Village Phase I Landmarking Final — Where is Phase II?

The City Council today affirmed the designation of the first phase of our proposed South Village Historic District. While this is mostly a formality, as the landmarking went into effect in June upon approval of the Landmarks Preservation Commission, this is an important milestone which focuses attention on the remaining two-thirds of the proposed South Village Historic District which the city has NOT yet acted upon.

Earlier this month GVSHP and more than two dozen local leaders and preservationists wrote to the Landmarks Preservation Commission urging them to keep their promise and move ahead with landmarking the remaining two-thirds of the South Village. At the City Council hearings on the first phase of the South Village Historic District earlier this week, GVSHP raised the question of when the city would act upon the remaining vulnerable two-thirds of the South Village; the Commission’s sole response was that they do not have a time frame for doing so.

HOW TO HELP:

Please send a letter to the Landmarks Preservation Commission urging that they move ahead right away with designation of the remaining two-thirds of the proposed South Village Historic District now that the first third has received final approval from the City Council > >
