Renewed Push for South Village Landmarking

GVSHP and more than two dozen community leaders have written to the city urging they keep their promise to consider the remainder of our proposed South Village Historic District right away.  Nearly a year ago, the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) Chair publicly stated that the LPC would be following up its consideration of the first third of our proposed South Village Historic District with further action.  While that first third was designated in June, the LPC has not yet taken any action to protect the remaining two-thirds of the neighborhood, nor offered any time frame for doing so.

The South Village is one of the most historically and culturally rich areas of New York City, containing a vast array of 19th and early 20th century architecture and some of the great sites of cultural and political ferment of the 20th century.  However, in the eight years since GVSHP first approached the city about landmarking the area, a succession of buildings have been lost without action, including the Provincetown Playhouse and Apartments, the Sullivan Street Playhouse, the Circle in the Square Theater, the Tunnel Garage, and the 1861 house at 178 Bleecker Street.  More losses are likely without action by the city soon.
