City Council Speaker Christine Quinn
224 West 30th Street, Suite 1206
New York, NY 10001
fax: (212) 564-7347
email: speakerquinn@council.nyc.ny.us

Dear Speaker Quinn:

I am deeply disappointed that so many members of the public were prevented from testifying at the Council’s sole public hearing on the Rudin/St. Vincent’s rezoning. Hundreds were literally left out in the cold, waiting on the street for hours because the rooms provided by the Council for the hearing were much too small to accommodate the very large expected crowd.

Nevertheless, I strongly urge you NOT to support the rezoning of the St. Vincent’s East Campus, as proposed by Rudin Management.

The proposed rezoning would basically hand most of the special zoning considerations from St. Vincent’s, which was granted them to build larger new hospital facilities, to Rudin, for a project to build luxury condos that are too big and would result in the unnecessary demolition of the Reiss building.

This is not acceptable for this site, and this is not acceptable for anywhere in Greenwich Village.  Special zoning considerations granted to institutions which serve a legitimate public purpose should not be handed off to private developers when that institution ceases to exist.
