Landmarks Approves 11 Jane Street

The approved 11 Jane Street design.

We are disappointed to report that on Tuesday the Landmarks Preservation Commission voted to approve the revised design for a new building at 11 Jane Street, with minor details still to be worked out between the applicant and LPC staff.  GVSHP had written the LPC in advance of the meeting urging them to demand further changes to the revised design, as had scores of our members.  Coverage of the decision can be found in Curbed NYNY YIMBYDNAinfoThe Architect’s NewspaperPatch and The Real Deal.

In spite of our disappointment with the LPC’s decision, GVSHP thanks everyone who wrote to the LPC, turned out for meetings, and otherwise participated in the landmarks review public process, which did make a difference.  Had it not been for landmarking, we might have seen a much taller and even more inappropriately designed building on this site, with no public input whatsoever.  And had we not pushed back and engaged in the public review process before the Landmarks Preservation Commission, earlier larger and even more out of place versions of the design might have been approved.

For some helpful context within which to view this decision, see GVSHP’s report compiling all forty or so new buildings the LPC has approved in the Greenwich Village Historic District since its designation in 1969 – read it here.

More information and background on the 11 Jane Street application can be found here and here, while other current and past landmarks applications in our neighborhood can be found here.
