Planned Addition to Landmarked 827-831 Broadway Returns Tuesday

A revised and slightly shrunken plan to add a 4-story addition to the recently-landmarked 827-831 Broadway (view it here) will return to the Landmarks Preservation Commission for consideration this coming Tuesday, April 24th, at 10:00am (see here for more information). No testimony will be allowed, but the public can submit comments in writing and attend the meeting to hear the discussion and possible decision.

GVSHP led a successful year and a half campaign to save these 1866 loft buildings, which housed some of the greatest figures of 20th-century art, from the wrecking ball and replacement with a 300 ft. tall tech office tower. Following designation over the objections of the new developer/owner, an application was filed for a jarring, 4-story glass addition to the building. We were heartened when the members of the Commission pushed back on the proposal, saying it overwhelmed the building and was too visually prominent.

The applicant has now submitted a revised proposal which responds to some, but we would argue not all, of the concerns about its appropriateness. The proposed addition has been pushed back an additional 8 feet and reduced in height by 5 feet, while the glass facets on its exterior have been made slightly less prominent. But we believe the proposed addition is still much too prominent and jarring in relation to the landmarked building.
