City Council voted to uphold the NoHo Historic District Extension WITHOUT any carve-outs.
Good news — after a fierce battle lasting weeks, yesterday the City Council voted to uphold the NoHo Historic District Extension WITHOUT any carve-outs. Hotel developer Sam Chang had been lobbying hard to have a property he owns at 338 Bowery, the White House Hotel, removed from the historic district.
GVSHP worked closely with the Historic Districts Council and neighbors and local NoHo groups, and argued strongly against removal of any properties from the designation. While a few City Councilmembers voted against the designation and argued in favor of removing the property, ultimately the majority of the Council voted to affirm the NoHo Historic District Extension. Removal of this property from the historic district would have been a blow to efforts to preserve NoHo and to preserve the Bowery, which is facing extreme development pressure.
The 56-building, 3 block extension of the NoHo Historic District is the culmination of many years of work. GVSHP and many neighborhood and preservation groups and elected officials have long advocated for expanding the NoHo Historic District, which was designated in 1999 by the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) but which still left much of eastern and southern NoHo unprotected. While the LPC's extension does not include the entire neighborhood or every site GVSHP and others had urged be included, it does significantly extend landmark protections to a rich historic area which sorely needs them.
