Two Years and Counting — Call Upon the City to Landmark the Entire South Village NOW!

FooterWE NEED YOUR HELP IN GETTING THE CITY TO KEEP ITS WORD AND MOVE AHEAD WITH LANDMARKING THE SOUTH VILLAGE.

Two years ago this week the first third of our proposed South Village Historic District was designated.  It took several years to get the City to act, and we were promised it would be followed closely by action on the remaining two-thirds.

Two years later, even after the South Village has been declared one of the seven most important endangered historic sites in New York State, there has been NO movement by the City to keep its promise.

Making matters worse, the City is moving ahead with considering a massive rezoning and expansion plan by NYU for the blocks directly adjacent to the very neighborhood we are trying to get landmarked.  AMONG THE MANY OTHER HORRIBLE CONSEQUENCES OF THE NYU PLAN, IT WOULD NEGATIVELY IMPACT AND INCREASE DEVELOPMENT PRESSURE ON THE SOUTH VILLAGE, WHERE WE HAVE ALREADY SEEN A SERIES OF HISTORIC BUILDINGS LOST OR COMPROMISED.

FooterSo while we fight the NYU plan as it goes to the City Council, I need you to join me in urging city officials to finally move ahead with landmarking the South Village.

Mayor Bloomberg has said he supports the NYU Expansion Plan, but has taken no position on protecting the South Village.

Councilmember Margaret Chin and Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who represent the South Village and have supported its landmark designation, will largely decide the fate of the NYU plan at the Council

Tell Mayor Bloomberg, Councilmember Chin, and Speaker Quinn that it's unfair and outrageous that the NYU plan has made it all the way to the City Council while no action is being taken on landmarking the South Village.
