Landmarks Vote on 827-831 Broadway Tuesday

The Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) is set to vote on landmarking 827-831 Broadway on Tuesday, October 31 at 9:45am at their hearing room in the Municipal Building, One Centre Street, 9th floor.  There will be no public testimony, but the public can attend.

GVSHP has been fighting for a year and a half to save these buildings from the wrecking ball since we discovered plans to demolish them and replace them with a 300 ft. tall tower. Our research behind the landmarking proposal documented how these buildings served as an unprecedented nexus of art world activity in the late 20th century, including serving as the home and studio of Willem de Kooning, and was designed by one of 19th century New York’s great architects and connected to some of the greatest commercial innovators in early American history.  Read all our research here.  At the hearing last week we had a very strong turnout in support of designation.

Should the LPC vote to designate the buildings, landmarking would take immediate effect.  While we are optimistic the LPC will do so given the overwhelming significance of the buildings, we take nothing for granted. And we are continuing to fight for landmark and zoning protections for the surrounding area between 3rd and 5th Avenues.
