Huge Turnout to Save Area Between Union Square and Astor Place; Rally 4/22

GVSHP held a huge, standing-room only meeting Wednesday night about how to protect the area between Union Square and Astor Place, 5th and 3rd Avenues, from an explosion of new, out-of-scale development. In addition to hundreds of neighbors, we were joined by City Councilmember Rosie Mendez, who expressed her strong support for our seeking zoning or other protections for this area, especially in light of the Mayor’s pursuit of City Council approvals for a ‘Tech Hub’ development on 14th Street. If that development is approved without these protections, it would greatly accelerate the overdevelopment of this area, making it an extension of “Silicon Alley.”
Video, powerpoint presentation, pictures, and the handout from last night, along with other information, can be found here.
As a next step, we will be holding a rally and press conference on Saturday, April 22 at 3pm on the east side of Broadway north of 11th Street (flyer HERE). It’s critical that we have a large turnout – please attend and spread the word. If you plan to attend, please let us know here.
And please keep sending letters to the Mayor and his team HERE and to local elected officials HERE demanding protections for our neighborhood or NO TECH HUB. Ask friends and neighbors to do the same.
