Chelsea Market Upzoning Application May Begin Review Process

Chelsea MarketPublished reports indicate that Jamestown Properties’ application to upzone Chelsea Market to allow two huge new additions to be built atop the 9th and 10th Avenue ends of the complex may be certified by the City Planning Commission on April 9, which would begin the official public review and approval process.

GVSHP and a broad coalition of local and preservation groups have strongly opposed the proposal, which would permanently mar the beloved historic complex, add traffic and congestion to an already overburdened area, and cast a shadow over the High Line and the adjacent Gansevoort Market Historic District.  Thousands of New Yorkers have signed petitions and written city officials stating their opposition.  The plan to build these two large towers – one for offices, the other a hotel – above the iconic complex can ONLY happen if the requested upzoning is approved by the City Planning Commission and the City Council.
