Critical Upcoming Chelsea Market Hearing and Vote

Chelsea MarketOn May 2nd, Community Board #4 held a public hearing on the proposed upzoning of Chelsea Market to allow large new office and hotel towers to be erected atop the historic complex (see images HERE).  Opponents of the project outnumbered supports by more than two-to-one (read coverage HERE).

The Community Board is the first step in the public review and approval process for the proposed upzoning which is needed to allow the additions atop Chelsea Market by developer Jamestown Properties. The Community Board's vote is advisory, and is followed by the Borough President's vote, which is also advisory. Following this, the proposal must be heard, voted on and approved by the City Planning Commission and the City Council in order for it to move ahead. GVSHP strongly opposes the upzoning and the additions.

Community Board #4’s Chelsea Preservation and Planning Committee will vote on whether or not to approve the upzoning and the plan next Thursday, May 31st.  That recommendation will then go to the full Board which will then vote on whether or not to approve it the following Wednesday, June 6th.  While public testimony will not be allowed at the Committee meeting on the 31st, the public can sign up to speak on this or any other topic at the full board meeting on the 6th.
