East Village Preservation Progress and Setbacks
 GVSHP has been working in concert with fellow preservation organizations and East Village community groups to support and promote the extension of landmark protections in the East Village. Last week we wrote to the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) in support of their moving ahead with potential landmark designations in the neighborhood, but also urging them to expand their study areas to include important adjacent sites, and to commit to consider additional areas in the neighborhood in the near future. At a presentation at Community Board #3 last week, many people spoke in support of designation and of expanding the study area to include these sites (see coverage on NY1 News and in the New York Times HERE and HERE).
The LPC is currently considering next steps, which we hope will include an expansion of the study area.
In more discouraging news, the owner of 35 Cooper Square, a nearly 200 year old house on the Bowery between 5th and 6th Streets which the LPC refused to landmark, has begun to demolish the structure. Unfortunately this was done in spite of a promise by the developer to seriously consider ways in which a planned new development could integrate preservation of the historic structure (see coverage in the New York Times).
