Mourn the Loss of 35 Cooper Square, Organize for More Protections

Join the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, the Bowery Alliance of Neighbors, the Historic Districts Council, and other community groups to mourn the loss of 35 Cooper Square, an 1825 federal house on the Bowery, and to call upon the City to do a better job of protecting the fragile historic resources on the Bowery and elsewhere in the East Village.

Last week, the new developer/owner of 35 Cooper Square began to demolish this wonderful historic structure, with links to the earliest Dutch settlers of New York and luminaries of the Beat Movement, in spite of a promise to preservation groups to seriously examine options for integrating the house into a new development on this and adjacent sites. In spite of the age and remarkable cultural history of the building, the City refused to landmark the building. The City has failed to protect many of the most endangered historic sites on the Bowery, including the Amato Opera, and in the East Village, including the recently decimated 326 & 328 East 4th Streets.

HOW TO HELP:

  • Come to the demonstration next Wednesday, May 25th at 6 pm in front of 35 Cooper Square, Bowery and 5th Street. Wear black or funeral attire; bring signs calling on the City to protect our history and our neighborhoods.
