Public Forum on Protecting Small Businesses in the East Village, Wed. June 7
GVSHP urges you to attend and speak at a public forum examining creating a special zoning district in the East Village to help protect and reinforce small, independent businesses, and to discourage chain store proliferation. GVSHP has long supported such measures and we are thrilled that Community Board #3 (East Village/Lower East Side) is holding this forum to examine possible proposals. The forum will begin at 6:30 this Wednesday, June 7 at Sirovich Senior Center, 331 E. 12th Street (1st/2nd Ave.)
A special zoning district could help protect small independent businesses by limiting the size of retail spaces and limiting the number of chain stores which can locate in an area. GVSHP believes such measures are worthy of consideration and could help preserve and protect local independently-owned businesses, foster retail diversity, and help limit the blight of vacant storefronts we see in some areas, often being held for years waiting for a high-paying chain store to occupy the space.
Click here for the flyer and here for more information. The public can speak for 2 minutes each. We strongly encourage you to attend and show support for considering such measures.
