After Threat Spotted by GVSHP, East Village Landmarking to Move Ahead

315 East 10th StreetIn early December, GVSHP discovered that notorious East Village developer Ben Shaoul was seeking permits from the Department of Buildings to build atop 315 East 10th Street, an 1847 building in the calendared East 10th Street Historic District. The proposed Historic District, encompassing all of Tompkins Square North, displays an incredible degree of intactness and uniformity among its several dozen buildings, and thus an addition of this nature would greatly disrupt the historic and architectural character of the block.

Joined by our colleague neighborhood and preservation groups, GVSHP immediately called the threat to the attention of the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC), urging them to take immediate action to prevent such permits from being issued.

We are pleased to report that after multiple delays in moving ahead with consideration of designation of this proposed district, following our letter the LPC has announced that they will hold a hearing on designating the proposed district on January 17th (time TBD). We will continue to work to get the LPC to move ahead swiftly enough with this and other proposed landmark designations in the East Village to ensure that the area does not face further damage to its historic character. Please circle the January 17th date on your calendar; as we get closer to the hearing date, we will provide information on how you can attend and testify, as well as how you can send letters in support of designation.
