City Still Needs Push on Far West Village Rezoning

Two months after GVSHP and a dozen community groups hosted 150 neighbors for a Town Hall meeting about the need to change the outdated C6-1 zoning district in the Far West Village, we are still awaiting word from the Department of City Planning as to whether they will propose a change to the zoning to protect the scale and character of the Far West Village.

The Department of City Planning has received literally hundreds of letters, e-mails, and petition signatures urging them to change this zoning district since GVSHP first urged them to do so in April of 2008. In anticipation of our Town Hall meeting this April, City Planning met with local elected officials and community board representatives to say they would consider the proposal, but have still not yet given an answer as to whether they will or won’t. The C6-1 zone covering parts of 6 blocks in the Far West Village allows out-of-scale development and offers incentives for hotel and dormitory construction.

Given the City Planning Department’s lack of response so far, GVSHP has written to its Director Amanda Burden urging that they move immediately on this request so that no more out-of-character development can take place under the current, inappropriate zoning.

HOW TO HELP

The proposed hotel development at 145 Perry Street/711 Washington Street which spurred the call for a change in the zoning continues to evolve — view the original hotel-only proposal and the revised version approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission last year, and the new and smaller hotel/residential proposal and the most recently revised version presented to the LPC last week.
