Far West Village Rezoning Vote

After many delays, on Wednesday, September 15th the City Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on a proposed rezoning in the Far West Village first requested by GVSHP and other community groups in April 2008.  The six block rezoning would get rid of an outdated zoning district which encourages out-of-scale commercial development, and replace it with one which imposes contextual height limits and which eliminates the current incentive for hotel and dormitory development in the area.

GVSHP and community groups spent much of the last two and a half years seeking support for and movement on the requested rezoning from the city, Community Board, and local elected officials.  After many delays, the rezoning approval process, which takes several months, began this spring.  However, two developments are in motion which may seek to move ahead under the existing, more permissive zoning, before the new zoning takes effect, allowing developments which are either larger than the new zoning would allow, or which contain larger hotels than the new zoning would allow.

Therefore GVSHP is calling upon the City Planning Commission to vote as soon as possible in favor of the proposed rezoning, so that it may reach its final stage, the City Council, as quickly as possible. After approval by the Council, it becomes law.
