Revised and Improved Proposal for 85-89 Jane Street

GVSHP is pleased to report that proposals for huge additions and alterations to 85-89 Jane Street (Greenwich/Washington Streets) in the Greenwich Village Historic District, to which GVSHP and many others vociferously objected when heard by the Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) in July, have been radically changed and scaled back.
The new proposal reduces or eliminates most of the features about which we expressed serious concerns. View the new proposal here.
The proposal will come back before the LPC on Tuesday, October 11 at approximately 9:30 a.m. for a public meeting, where it will be presented to and reviewed by the Commission (it is recommended you arrive by 9 am at the LPC hearing room, One Centre Street, 9th floor). At this meeting, there will be no public testimony, though the public can observe, and written comments can be submitted in advance of the meeting to comments@lpc.nyc.gov.
The original proposal included 80-90 ft. tall glass and concrete towers which would have been wholly out of place and precedent-setting within the Greenwich Village Historic District. The new proposal preserves and keeps intact much of the historic features of the two small buildings currently located on the site, proposing much more modest additions. The new proposed façade also responds to many of the concerns we raised about the prior design seeming too monolithic and imposing.
We are deeply gratified that the LPC, which raised many of the same concerns as GVSHP, and the applicant, listened to much of the public's feedback. GVSHP generated hundreds of letters from the public to the LPC expressing objections to the original design, and we were joined by scores of neighbors and fellow preservationists at the hearing at the LPC in July.
