Calling on the LPC to Follow Through on Promised Landmark Protections in the Far West Village

FooterApplications were recently filed to make substantial alterations to the 1839 Greek Revival rowhouse at 370 11th Street, a rare surviving Greek Revival house along the primarily-industrial Greenwich Village waterfront. The plans, which include changes to both the front and rear facades and the addition of a large penthouse, would heavily alter the building's significant historic fabric. We have sent a letter to the Landmarks Preservation Commission urging them to calendar this endangered 170-year old building.

No. 370 West 11th Street and its neighbor at No. 372 were among eight individual sites that the City promised to consider for landmark designation in 2005. Since then, five of these sites have been designated, though Charles Lane and the two 11th Street houses remain unprotected. Though we have regularly asked the City over the last six-and-a-half years to calendar these three remaining sites, no action has been taken since this promise was made, AND THE WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY FOR THE LPC TO ACT BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE IS RAPIDLY CLOSING.

HOW TO HELP:

Write to the Landmarks Preservation Commission NOW urging them to calendar 370 West 11th Street and the other remaining historic resources in the Far West Village >>
