Critical Public Hearing: The South Village and Hudson Sq., Next Wed. 9/19

The City is moving ahead with a plan to rezone Hudson Square, but without necessary landmark protections for the neighboring South Village and appropriate height limits for new development.

There will be a second and final public hearing by Community Board #2 on the proposed Hudson Square rezoning next Wednesday, September 19th at 6:30 pm at the Fire Museum, 278 Spring Street (Varick/Hudson Streets), 3rd floor.  Under the current proposal, the Hudson Square Rezoning would allow Midtown-sized new buildings in Hudson Square (in one case as tall as the Trump SoHo) while increasing development pressure upon the neighboring, fragile proposed South Village Historic District, which still lacks promised landmark protections.  Community Board #2 will soon be voting on the plan, the first step in the six month public review and approval process.

WE ARE CALLING FOR LOWER HEIGHT AND BULK LIMITS FOR NEW DEVELOPMENT IN HUDSON SQUARE, AND THAT THE PROPOSED REZONING MUST BE COUPLED WITH LANDMARK PROTECTIONS FOR THE ADJACENT AND ENDANGERED SOUTH VILLAGE.  These changes would actually make the rezoning beneficial, rather than detrimental, to the surrounding community.

Read the op-ed in the Villager newspaper about the proposed rezoning and its impact upon the South Village, and why we need Speaker Quinn to make these changes to the plan, HERE.

HOW TO HELP:

  • Come to the Community Board #2 Public Hearing this coming Wednesday, September 19th at 6:30 pm at the Fire Museum, 278 Spring Street (Varick/Hudson Streets), 3rd floor.  TESTIFY during the public session, and call for LOWER HEIGHT AND BULK LIMITS FOR THE REZONING AND INSIST THAT IT MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY LANDMARK PROTECTIONS FOR THE SOUTH VILLAGE.
