Hudson Square/South Village Hearing Tonight

The City is moving ahead with a plan to rezone Hudson Square, but without necessary landmark protections for the neighboring South Village and appropriate height limits for new development.

This is a final reminder of the critical public hearing taking place tonight, Wednesday, September 19 at 6:30 pm at the Fire Museum, 278 Spring Street (Varick/Hudson Streets), 3rd floor.  This will be the Community Board’s final public hearing on the zoning aspects of the proposed Hudson Square rezoning before they vote in October.  The rezoning will then be be voted upon by the Borough President, the City Planning Commission, and the City Council, the latter two of which will decide if it is adopted, amended, or rejected.

GVSHP and many community groups have long called for a rezoning of Hudson Square.  BUT the currently proposed rezoning allows buildings as tall as the Trump SoHo, and offers no protections for the neighboring proposed-but-not-enacted South Village Historic District, which will experience a marked increase in development pressure if the rezoning passes (read more HERE).  Therefore we are urging the Community Board, the Borough President, the City Planning Commission, and the City Council to substantially lower the proposed height and bulk limits in the rezoning, and to ONLY allow it to move ahead IF accompanied by designation of the proposed South Village Historic District.
